Reinventing Loyalty: A Fresh Take

Over the past few years, Creating Excellence Marketing Corp. and Mingle Marketing have teamed up on countless projects. The kind that dig deeper than just flashy campaigns or surface-level engagement. With a shared specialty in shopping centre marketing and a string of ICSC awards behind us, we know what it takes to create meaningful impact.

So, when our client approached us to help celebrate their 50th Anniversary, we knew it had to be more than just balloons, sheet cake, and a shouty “look at me” moment.

Because honestly? As shoppers, we wouldn’t care either.

That’s our NorthStar: “Would We Care?” It’s our guiding question, and it keeps us grounded in every strategy, activation, and idea we develop. If we wouldn’t be excited to experience it, why should anyone else?

We explored multiple directions and even landed on one idea we loved. But the budget didn’t love us back. And while it had creative flair, we couldn’t justify the cost when the ROI just didn’t hold up. We treat our clients’ budgets like they’re our own, so we scrapped it and went back to the drawing board.

Sometimes the universe has a reason your Plan A doesn’t work. It’s about trusting the process and your gut. What we came up with is bigger, better, and more impactful than we ever could have hoped — and it does everything a loyalty program should do.

It’s been a long time since loyalty programs had their moment in shopping centres. They fizzled out for a reason. From outdated catalogues of rewards to clunky redemption processes and unpredictable inventory, loyalty lost its luster. And shoppers noticed. Many centres struggled to keep it fresh or relevant or to even know what customers truly wanted.

So we asked ourselves: what would a loyalty program look like today if it was built for how people actually shop, browse, and engage — both online and in person?

That became the foundation for a much bigger strategy. One that would:

  • Drive online traffic
  • Drive in-centre traffic
  • Support tenants
  • Reward customers
  • Build and showcase community
  • And celebrate how deeply our clients shopping centre is woven into the fabric of the city

We didn’t want to hit people over the head with another “shop local” message they’ve already heard a thousand times. We wanted to earn their attention and make it personal.

That’s when the NorthStar Loyalty Program™ was born.

A Loyalty Program That Actually Works (And Why)

We knew we wanted to develop something deeper than a static reward board. So we created a layered 4-month campaign that let shoppers earn and track Reward Tokens through 13 different activities — from quick-click entries to in-person experiences that nudged people off their couches and into the centre.

At its core, the platform was both app- and web-based. But instead of housing it on a third-party site, we built it into the client’s website. This drove all traffic to a property they owned. That small decision paid off. Session tracking, UTMs, and engagement data flowed straight into the client’s ecosystem, making it easier to track ROI across paid, organic, and email channels.

Shoppers registered once, and from there, participation was seamless. Whether they were uploading a memory, scanning a QR code in front of our giant Decade Carousel, or reserving a mystery vault prize, they could see their Rewards Vault update in real time. That instant gratification was a driver, not just for clicks but for continued action.

High-Effort, High-Value

Unlike traditional points programs that reward you for, well, breathing, our model was deliberate. Low-effort online actions earned fewer tokens. But tasks that required someone to show up in-centre or contribute emotionally to the campaign were rewarded more generously.

For example, shoppers were asked to upload personal stories tied to the mall’s history to help build a community Memory Wall. It was a heavier ask. And the response? Overwhelming.

We built excitement using a drip strategy to release rewards in waves, keeping high-value items visible at launch to spark momentum. And instead of just handing out gift cards, we added a twist. Shoppers could redeem ballot packs for a surprise vault package. Think nostalgia, suspense, and a chance at something exclusive. Suddenly, we had a hot item with virtually unlimited inventory risk.

All rewards were redeemed in person at a one-time Birthday Pop-Up, driving tangible foot traffic. Prizes were pre-assembled, pick-up will be seamless, and for the customer, it felt like a real reward — not just another coupon code.

Community Meets Commerce

This wasn’t just a loyalty program. It was a love letter to the mall’s history and the role it’s played in the community for 50 years.

We brought that history to life with the Decade Carousel, an in-centre display that was re-skinned monthly and invited people to take selfies, reflect, and engage with each decade. It was more than a photo op. It was a strategic traffic driver, layered into a larger activation that rewarded interaction.

Events like the Youth Entrepreneur Market were amplified with one-day-only bonus codes. eNewsletter members received exclusive token boosts that rewarded loyalty while helping grow the email list.

We built a system that didn’t just reward purchases. It rewarded participation, memory sharing, and community pride.

Built to Scale

While this version was created for a centre celebrating its 50th anniversary, the core mechanics are fully adaptable. With strategic tweaks, the model could work for back-to-school, holiday gifting, or even new tenant launches. The balance of online convenience with in-person value is flexible and grounded in behavioural insight, not gimmicks.

The activities we thought would be ‘nice-to-haves’ turned out to be the soul of the campaign. They became the core drivers of emotional connection and participation.

Results and final engagement metrics will come once the campaign closes. But already, we’ve seen unexpected wins that confirmed what we’ve always believed: when you build for the customer, the impact follows.
